Aesa and Samson Come Home

I have posted our announcement about bringing Fex home from the pet store.  I had planned on doing the same for our announcement for adopting Aesa and Samson.  However I had forgotten to do so until my post earlier this morning.  So just shy of 2 weeks late here are the announcement emails from 3 years ago, Aug 19th, 2006.

Ferret News Network.

As you might recall Eadie was having a case of the ferret rabies when up there.  When we got back we started looking into ferret shelters to adopt 1-2 ferrets to romp around with Fex.  Well, the local shelter we knew about hasn’t updated their page in a year and didn’t answer to email.  Another local shelter which takes ferrets also didn’t answer email.  So we ended up doing general Google searches.  The nearest active ferret shelters we could find were in SLC and outside of Phoenix.  Some cuuuuute ferrets but a wee bit too far.

One of the searches turned up a local ad on craigslist.com.  Eadie answered but those ferrets were already given a new home.  A few days later there was a second listing for 2 ferrets that needed a new home.  We answered and at 10am today picked them up.  They came with a *huge* cage and in our honest opinion certainly needed a good home.  When we picked them up they didn’t even have a water bottle attached to the cage.  When we got home we filled up a water bottle and they drank from it for a good 5 minutes straight.   😦

So Fex now has two buds to romp with and a much larger cage to do it in.  Their names are Aesa (pronounced ee-sah) and Samson.  Of course I am guessing at how Aesa’s name is spelled but there ya go.

Anyway, Aesa is a teeny-tiny female.  She’s a pretty sable and a snuggler.  She was named after a boy the daughter had a crush on.  Hence not being sure of the exact spelling.  We were told she is 2 years old.

Samson is a male.  Samson was named because he was the biggest in the cage when they got him so they thought he’d grow up big however he didn’t grow much more.  He’s fairly smaller than Fex so our baby boy is the biggest by far.  He’s a very cute silver and almost as snuggly as Aesa.  We were told he is 18 months old.

We’ve got them home, the cage cleaned, set up and restocked with ferrety goodness.

Anyway, back to the good home part.  When we showed up to pick them up the cage was a total mess.  The reason the previous owners were looking for a new home is because the ferrets were bought for their (now) 12 year old daughter.  She had since lost interest in them and now wants a puppy.  When given the choice of the ferrets or a puppy she chose the latter.

So the cage was an absolute mess.  If a single pile of ferret poop had been cleaned out in the past 3 weeks I’d be surprised.  They’ve been fed kitten chow their entire life.  It’s not as bad as normal cat food or, heaven forbid, dog food, but it doesn’t provide everything a ferret needs.  So we’re pretty sure their size is due to some malnutrition.  We’re going to try to ween them off of kitten chow and onto the same stuff we feed Fex.  The good news is that they both loved the vitamin chews/paste we use as treats on Fex so while we struggle with changing their food imprint they’ll be getting better nutrition than they have ever before.  We’re hoping that’ll bulk ’em out a bit and give ’em a nice coat.

I mentioned the water but they also didn’t have much more than a few blankets in their cage.  No toys, hammocks, hidey-holes, nothing.  So now they not only have 2 water bottles and a clean cage but some toys, some snuggy places and a few hidey-holes as well.  😀

I have a few pictures but lost my Axim’s USB cable so I cannot get them from my Axim to the computer.  When I find it I’ll post the pictures for you.

Ferret News Update!

Here’s the promised pictures.

First up is Fex reaching his food in a creative way.  He had dug his food out of his bin so mom decreed he would not get the bin back until he ate all the food he dug up.  He showed her!  If the bin had still been in place he wouldn’t have been able to do this.

Next is Aesa and Samson in the carry cage while we were cleaning and setting up their huge cage.  Samson is the photo hog up front and Aesa’s the dark one in back.

Finally a cleaner shot of Samson and Aesa with Samson hogging the camera again.  This is just after we set up their cage and moved them in.

Ferret News Network Update 2 (actually this was from the 29th of Aug. 2006 but it’s part of the same announcement…)

Here’s a few shots from the first night we had the new kidlets home.  We cut them loose in our computer room as an introduction and they were tearing up the place in no time.

BTW, when I say our monster ferret here’s why.  We took ’em to the vet this last weekend for a check-up and shots.  All of ’em are fine.  The vet weighed each of ’em.

Aesa, the female, came in at 1lb, 9oz.
Samson, the new (to us) male was 2lb, 1oz.
Fex, our “baby boy” that started our ferret madness, was 2lb, 11oz!

Here’s Fex and Aesa in mid-chase.  Aesa just turned around to pounce on Fex who had been chasing her up to this point:

And Fex startling Samson.  Somehow I caught him mid-leap:

We were concerned about Aesa’s weight so first night out we were feeding Samson and Aesa vitamin supplements from a tube.  Aesa ended up with some on her head and then decided to try to wipe it off by burrowing into the cage’s bedding.  It didn’t improve matters much.  End result, 3 ferrets off for a bath:
